Thinking of applying for a grant? Here are some tips to help.

Medavie is committed to improving the wellbeing of Canadians through our support of programs that make a difference in the lives of those impacted by mental illness. We tend to focus our support on initiatives that encourage healthy living and mental resiliency, involve the community, are sustainable and have the potential to serve as a model for others.

With this in mind, we consider five key elements when reviewing funding proposals.

Innovative Programming Targeting Adolescent Mental Health

First, we determine if your program is directly focused on mental health or if there’s another focus with only secondary links. For example, is it an actual program or are you looking to purchase equipment or secure funding for an awareness campaign.

Next, we consider if there’s anything unique or innovative about the program. Whether it’s new or established, we also look at the potential for replication: could another organization replicate or modify this program in another community?

An Organization With a Solid Track Record

Tell us about your organization, your experience offering programs and the key personnel involved. We’ve found that a project champion can make all the difference in helping a program succeed. Also, what’s your vision and does it align with ours?

Realistic Funding Ask with Timelines

Include a budget that provides details on how you’ll spend the money (materials/supplies, training, program facilitation, etc.) and when. Don’t forget to tell us if your project receives funding from other sources and note that we do require financial statements audited in Canada. As for the funding amount, our grants typically range from $5,000 to $50,000.

Targeted Impact with Measurable Results

Define the goals of the program and if it addresses an existing or unmet need in your community. Be sure to include details on how you intend to engage the targeted population, how many people you expect to reach either directly or indirectly, the program’s geographical scope, and how you’ll measure success.

Community Involvement

If you have great relationships with organizations and community groups, we want to hear about them, including letters of support. Describe how you’ll involve these partners and, in doing so, involve the broader community.

Guided by our mission of improving the wellbeing of Canadians, we support community-based programs that encourage healthy change in helping create a culture of wellness.
