About the scholarship
The Medavie Scholarship honours Pierre-Yves Julien, the former CEO of Medavie. As a not-for-profit health services organization, Pierre-Yves recognized our commitment to the communities where our employees, and the Canadians we serve, live and work.
Up to five scholarships of $5,000 each will be awarded this year to youth who are living with a mental health challenge of their own or that of a family member and are pursuing health-related post-secondary studies at a recognized Canadian university or community college and plan to pursue a career in their health-related field of studies. Each scholarship will be renewable for up to three additional years, subject to continued eligibility.
Eligibility Criteria
- Currently between the ages of 17 and 25 years old
- Canadian citizen or Canadian permanent resident
- Enrolled in full-time studies at a recognized post-secondary educational institution based in Canada (university or community college)
- Pursuing a health-related field of study (e.g., medical school, nursing, psychology, kinesiology, physiotherapy, nutrition, paramedicine, chiropractic care, public health, health research, etc.)
- Plans to pursue a career in your health-related field of studies
- Living with a mental health challenge of their own or that of a family member
Confirmation of your enrolment in a recognized post-secondary institution (university or community college) in Canada is required prior to funds being awarded. The Medavie Scholarship is administered by the Medavie Foundation.
Who can apply?
An applicant must be:
- A Canadian citizen or Canadian permanent resident
- Between the ages of 17 and 25
- Living with a mental health challenge of their own or that of a family member
- Is pursuing a health-related field of study at a recognized post-secondary educational institution in Canada
- (community college or university) with plans to pursue a career in their health-related field of studies.
How can I apply?
To apply for the 2024 Medavie Scholarship, applicants must complete and submit the online application by 11:59 PM EST on May 17, 2024.
What is the term/length of the scholarship?
Up to five scholarships of $5,000 will be awarded this year. Each scholarship will be renewable for up to three additional years, subject to confirmation of continued eligibility.
Which courses or programs count as health-related studies?
Applicants must be pursuing an education focused on health and dedicated to improving the wellbeing of others. Examples include eligible university and community college programs that include chiropractic care, gerontology, kinesiology, medical school, nursing, nutrition, paramedicine, physiotherapy, psychology, public health, related research, etc. Chosen recipients will be asked to provide proof of full-time enrolment before funds are awarded.
Is financial need a requirement for the scholarship?
No. However, financial need is taken into consideration during the final selection process, along with community involvement, letters of support, and career aspirations in a health-related field are the criteria that will be weighted the most in assessing each application.
Who can write my letters of support?
Letters of support can come from an ally who has known you for at least two years and who is not part of your family (e.g., your teacher/professor, guidance counsellor or other school representative, employer/supervisor, supervisor at a volunteer organization, coach, social worker/counsellor, health care provider etc.). Detailed instructions for providing a letter of support are available through the online application system once your eligibility has been confirmed.
Can I mail in my application?

What information is required to complete the application?
You will be asked to confirm you meet each of the eligibility criteria.
You will also be asked to provide information about your:
- Health-related career plans
- Community and school involvement
- Financial information
And you must also attach 2 letters of support to complete and submit the online application.
Can I attach documents to the online application?
The only documents that can be attached to the online application are the two mandatory letters of support. All other information must be provided within the online application form.
Will I be able to save an application in progress?
Yes. Once you have completed registration and verified your email you will be asked to save and exit the online application.
The online application is not working properly for me. What should I do?

How will the five scholarship recipients be selected?
Applications submitted by the deadline will be assessed by Medavie Foundation to identify the applicants with the most competitive and strongest fit with the scholarship’s focus. This includes youth pursuing health-related post-secondary studies at a recognized Canadian university or community college and with plans for a health-related career in their field of study after graduation. Additional consideration will be given to community involvement, financial need, and letters of support.
