As we kick off Healthcare Excellence Canada’s Patient Safety Week (October 28 - November 1), we’re thrilled to recognize our dedicated team for their incredible commitment to safety. From reducing risks to identifying potential hazards, our team consistently goes above and beyond for their patients. Join us in celebrating our 2024 Patient Safety Champions! 

Jim Madden – Advanced Care Paramedic, Community Paramedic

Meet Jim Madden, an Advanced Care Paramedic and Community Paramedic from Moose Jaw! Jim’s passion for paramedicine began early, inspired by his father, family friends, and countless hours watching Emergency on TV. Known for his dedication to safety, Jim always prioritizes the wellbeing of others, while also making sure to listen to their concerns. When asked about his career highlights, Jim humbly shares that it’s both the small and large positive impacts he makes every day that matter most. And if you ask about his dream superpower? Making a difference every day—no capes needed!

Stephane Richard – Coordinator, Safety Program  
Medavie Health Services New Brunswick
 

Safety is second nature to Stephane Richard, Safety Program Coordinator at Medavie Health Services New Brunswick. After nine years in the classroom, he shifted gears and became a Primary Care Paramedic in Bouctouche, New Brunswick, where he spent over a decade saving lives, including an unforgettable case involving an Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm. This experience deepened his appreciation for the importance of safety, which he now applies in his current role. Whether he's ensuring the safety of our vehicles or teaching others, Stephane's dedication shines.

Andrew Matheson, Advanced Care Paramedic  
MHS West - Shamrock

Meet Andrew Matheson, an Advanced Care Paramedic from Wynyard, Saskatchewan. Andrew’s commitment to safety earned him a nomination as an MHS Patient Safety Champion. Andrew always knew he wanted to work in healthcare, just not in a hospital. After 11 years as a Primary Care Paramedic and now as an ACP, he’s certain he made the right choice. His career highlights include every time he can bring a smile to a patient’s face. And if he could have a superpower? Teleportation—to deliver care in an instant!

Curtis Bourgeois, Community Paramedic 
MHS West – Saskatoon

Curtis Bourgeois is a Community Paramedic on the MHS West Health Bus in Saskatoon, bringing care to those who need it most. From flu vaccines to blood sugar checks, Curtis and his team are making a real difference for Saskatoon’s most vulnerable. While Curtis doesn’t have the ability to fly (his dream superpower), his patients already see him as a hero.

Cat Martin, Community Paramedic 
Chatham-Kent EMS

Cat’s motivation for becoming a paramedic is simple: to help people. As a community paramedic in Chatham-Kent, she fulfills that mission daily by meeting people where they are and working to keep them safe and healthy. For Cat, the most meaningful part of her job is making a difference in their lives, but the real highlights are seeing the joy, gratitude, and relief on the faces of those she serves. It's this deep connection with others that inspires her dream superpower—flying around the world to experience new cultures and touch even more lives. Just don't forget your passport, Cat!
