A Full Career & Full Coop: Phil & Susan’s Story

Sitting in their house in downtown St. John’s, Phil and Susan were discussing their next big step. The city had its perks, but it didn’t quite fit. The couple wanted more space, peace, and a balanced lifestyle that felt more like them. That’s when the idea hit them:

“What if we moved out of the city — and raised chickens?”

It wasn’t just a daydream. As Medavie employees, working remotely, they realized they had the freedom to choose a life that fits their values, without compromising their careers.

They found a home in Flatrock, a picturesque town just outside St. John’s. With land to garden, more space to breathe, and room for chickens, the couple began building a life that balanced meaningful work with personal fulfillment.

“I had no idea about chickens at all when Susan brought them up,” Phil admits. “I was just like, well, if you want them, that’s fine — and now I'm obsessed. I love them.”

“Lavender is very soft and sweet,” Susan says, describing one of their many chickens, all of which have their own personalities. “Rhubarb can jump onto my lap or shoulder for treats. She's the smartest of them all, but still a chicken.”

A full life means work-life balance, homemade sourdough, and space to pursue their passions

Because Medavie recognizes that personal and professional needs evolve, many employees are offered a range of flexible working options. This flexibility gave Phil and Susan the peace of mind needed to make the move.

“Because we never had to be concerned about whether or not we'd have to go back to the office, this allowed us to look in places where historically we would have never,” Phil says. “We found this place with enough land for us to have space for the chickens and gardening, and the rest is history.”

After relocating to the Town of Flatrock, Phil and Susan found the perfect work-life balance and a lifestyle suited to their many hobbies.

Susan is an expert crafter who enjoys knitting, sewing, and crocheting. She’s also been playing volleyball for 20 years, and is an avid gardener, reader, and baker — sourdough being her specialty.

“My starter is named Gurt,” she says.

Less of a cook (by far, he admits, though he raves about Susan’s culinary skills — especially her Beef Wellington), Phil is a cosplayer and YouTube content creator. He also leads an extremely active lifestyle: just last year he completed a 50K ultramarathon.

“Working from home means that I can make space in my day at any point to prioritize my mental health by going for a run.” Phil says. “I'm not saying I’m running an ultramarathon on my lunch break — but when it’s nice and sunny, 30 minutes outside makes a big difference.”

Fulfilling careers, side by side

For the Medavie couple, full careers are about much more than just working from home. They’re also motivated by challenges, growth opportunities, and a supportive culture.

Phil, a Business Process Analyst on the Strategic Initiatives team, helps teams across Medavie with process improvements. By listening to their unique needs and challenges, he and his team design solutions to help increase their capacity, streamline workflows and identify opportunities for improvements.

Over the last year, Phil collaborated with the Medavie Blue Cross Contact Centre, who are the first point of contact for insurance plan members with questions about their health benefits, coverage, and claims. The goal was to improve the Centre’s service by increasing call capacity and reducing call time.

By simplifying workflows, reducing bottlenecks, and improving turnaround times, Phil’s work helps ensure Canadians receive timely, accurate, and reliable health services.

Phil finds satisfaction in knowing his work is making a tangible impact:

“Usually, when I am involved on a project, it’s to help teams navigate things that aren’t easy — because if it were easy, they likely would have been done already,” Phil says. “It’s extremely rewarding when I hear feedback about how things have improved and the impact my team and I have had on their day-to-day.”

As a Claims Analyst for Medavie Blue Cross, Susan helps ensure that behind every claim is a member who feels supported and confident in their coverage. It’s a busy job that is key to ensuring members can focus on their wellbeing. Susan, a people person who cares deeply about the members she serves, says the best part of working at Medavie is the people — highlighting how friendly, supportive, and welcoming her team is.

“Susan brings Medavie’s values to life in the most genuine way — whether it’s her kindness with colleagues, her dedication to helping others, or the integrity she shows in every decision. You can feel her passion for making a difference and bringing about positive change, and it inspires everyone around her to do the same. She's not just part of the team — she's the heart of it.”

“Go watch some chicken TV”

Raising chickens has taught the couple unexpected life lessons. In particular, about how a full life is about finding the good in the everyday.

“There’s a lot to be said about finding joy in the little things. I mean, chickens are literally little — and they do small things that are funny,” says Phil. “Everyone struggles sometimes. And when I have moments like that, Susan says to me: “Oh, why don’t you go watch some chicken TV?” As in, just go outside and watch them. It helps.”

“They also teach you about loss,” Susan adds. “They’re small animals. They don’t live long. But they bring a lot of happiness.”

When asked if their coworkers share their love of animals, the answer is a resounding “yes.”

“All the cubicles in the St. John’s office are named after employees’ pets,” Susan says. “And photos of everybody's pets are lining the walls of the break room!”

Bingo goals and big moves

At the beginning of the year, Phil and Susan created bingo cards of things they want to accomplish. Their cards list both big and small goals — like travelling to Europe, hosting a yard sale, and walking 50km.

“Eventually I would love to turn our garden into an English-style garden with wildflowers, cobblestone walkways, and have just this lush, green space to relax in,” Susan says.

As they work towards achieving their bingo goals, they’ve also taken on other challenges in their personal lives and work.

To add to their growing family of pets, Phil and Susan recently adopted an ex-racing greyhound that they are excited to rehabilitate. Their active lifestyle and commitment to wellbeing also extends into their community — they’re both training for a 5K fun run in support of the Canadian Mental Health Association.

In addition, Susan is fundraising for Epilepsy Canada, a cause close to her heart as someone living with epilepsy. Her personal experience reinforces their shared belief in the importance of health, wellness, and giving back.

Whether it’s setting new goals or trying something different, Phil and Susan bring curiosity and a sense of adventure to everything they do. With careers that support their values and lifestyle, they’ve found a rhythm that works — where a full career and a full life go hand in hand.
