Pride, Progress and Belonging at Medavie

Medavie Moncton office lit up in rainbow colours

As summer begins, communities across Canada come alive with Pride celebrations — a time to recognize and support the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. At Medavie, we are proud to stand alongside this community in a variety of colourful and meaningful ways, continuing our year-round commitment to inclusion and belonging.

Again this year, our theme is “Amplifying All Voices” — a call to action that reminds us of the importance of listening to and supporting every member of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. We believe that everyone deserves the opportunity to live fulfilling lives, and we’re committed to making this possible.

Showing our colours

From the colourful Pride epaulettes worn by our paramedics to the Pride flags flying high at our headquarters, we understand that visibility matters, and these small but important symbols show our support.

Our Moncton office will once again be lit up in rainbow colours—showing our dedication to inclusion and belonging.

As well, employees can show their Pride with custom-designed t-shirts created by Paige Sawler, Creative Advisor and Graphic Designer at Medavie.

“To me, Amplifying All Voices means making sure everyone has a space to feel heard, feel welcome, and feel like they belong,” says Paige. “The different perspectives and stories from all corners of the queer community are so valuable, and we all benefit when everyone is given space to be truly themselves.”

Supporting the community

While progress has been made, barriers to safe and supportive healthcare still exist. Many 2SLGBTQIA+ youth experience parental rejection and discrimination creating feelings of isolation and higher rates of mental health challenges within the community.

As a national health solutions partner, Medavie recognizes the need for community-led care.  Through the Medavie Foundation, we invest in organizations that reach underserved communities, including 2SLGBTQIA+ youth across Canada, who often distrust traditional healthcare institutions. Some of our partners include:

  • Trans Wellness Ontario - Provides mental health support for 2SLGBTQIA+ individuals and their families.
  • OUTSaskatoon – A community centre for 2SLGBTQ+ people in Saskatoon and surrounding areas.
  • Dans La Rue – A Montreal-based organization that helps unhoused and at-risk youth aged 12-25, often exiting the care system following parental rejection.

“The Medavie Foundation extends Medavie’s community-care delivery to reach youth who may be underserved by traditional healthcare, often because of distrust and isolation. We’re proud to embed credentialed counselling and therapy into spaces where feelings of safety, trust, and belonging can be rebuilt.”

Inclusive Benefits

We’re also designing our Medavie Blue Cross products and services with inclusion in mind. Our Gender Affirmation Benefit helps plan members receive financial support for gender-affirming care, like surgeries and hormone therapies.

This complements our Hormone Replacement Therapy coverage and helps reduce the financial and emotional burdens faced by transgender individuals.

By helping people access the care they need, we empower them to live as their authentic selves—an essential step toward improving the wellbeing of all Canadians, which is at the heart of what we do.

Looking inward, leading forward

Although Pride is a celebration, it’s also a powerful reminder that there is still much work to do for true inclusion and belonging.

At Medavie, that work began by looking inward. We examined our practices, listened to our people, and took meaningful steps to foster a more inclusive workplace.

Guided by our Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Strategy, we’ve laid the groundwork for lasting change through policies, programs, and everyday actions that create a culture of care, openness, and belonging.

And we didn’t stop there. In 2023, Medavie Blue Cross became the first Canadian insurer to be accredited as a Rainbow Registered organization — a national designation that recognizes organizations committed to 2SLGBTQIA+ inclusion through rigorous standards in policy, training, and leadership.

By creating a culture of respect, we ensure that our teams, patients, customers, partners, and communities feel valued for who they are.

Belonging isn’t just about what we say — it’s about what we do. During Pride, and every day, we have a responsibility to ensure our 2SLGBTQIA+ communities feel safe, respected, and supported at work. True inclusion shows up in how we treat each other, the words we use, and how we serve — with empathy, understanding, and accountability.

This summer, join us in celebrating Pride and embracing love, acceptance, and empowerment. Together, we can make a difference and create a more inclusive world.
