Humble beginnings

Founded in 1943 in Nova Scotia, Medavie was initially the Maritime Hospital Service Association, a not-for-profit organization that addressed the need for hospital expense coverage. Achieving early success, it gained 80,000 members within 18 months. During the 1960s, we joined other Blue Cross organizations across Canada in adapting their services to supplement publicly funded coverage.

As times changed, so did we, expanding to encompass many areas under healthcare and healthcare delivery.

Expanding our horizons

In 2006, Medavie EMS Group of Companies was formed to operate the organization's growing scope of ambulance services and operating regions. Medavie EMS, now Medavie Health, would later become Canada's largest contracted provider of EMS management services. Medavie Health Services now manages community-based health care programs, clinical training and medical communications throughout Canada and has operations in the Maritimes, Ontario, Saskatchewan and Alberta.

Giving back

Since 2011, Medavie has been giving back to communities through the Medavie Foundation. To make the greatest impact, we focus our giving on some of our country’s pressing health challenges, including:

  • improving access to healthy food and physical - activity
  • strengthening access to youth mental health services
  • supporting those impacted by post-traumatic stress.
