Medavie’s Mission in Motion Across Atlantic Canada

Note: At Medavie, we turned the calendar to 2024 with a renewed commitment to excellence in everything we do, inspired by our wins as one of Atlantic Canada’s Best Places to Work and Atlantic Business Magazine’s Readers’ Choice for Atlantic Canada’s Best Health Insurer for the fourth consecutive year. The following article appears in the January issue of Atlantic Business magazine where the awards announcements were made.

As a national health solutions partner, Medavie is always looking at new and innovative ways to deliver on its mission to improve the wellbeing of Canadians.

You can see evidence of its future-focused, people-centred approach to health care and delivery in the eight provinces where Medavie operates, backed by the strength of a team of 8,000-plus professionals — more than 6,400 of whom live and work in Atlantic Canada — and its partnerships with provincial and federal governments.

Medavie is building on a legacy of collaboration, innovation and vision that was established in 1943 when a group of like-minded individuals got together in Pictou, Nova Scotia, to respond to a growing need for affordable hospital care.

Eighty years later, the co-operative they formed to help cover the costs of hospitalization has evolved into an organization that that integrates benefits management, health management and health care delivery through the operating companies of Medavie Health Services (MHS) and Medavie Blue Cross (MBC). The scope of Medavie is reflected in its name, a bilingual hybrid of the words medical (‘med’) to life (or ‘à vie’, en français).

MBC provides health, dental, travel, life and disability benefits to plan members nationwide, covering over 1 in 3 Atlantic Canadians while administering federal and provincial government programs.

MHS is a primary health care provider and Canada’s largest contractor of emergency management services (EMS) that operates regional and municipal EMS systems, including ground and air ambulance, as well as integrated health programs, such as community paramedicine and mobile health clinics.

Across Atlantic Canada, MHS and MBC are helping to ease the pressures on the region’s health care system through ground-breaking programs that are bringing care into the homes and communities of Atlantic Canadians and empowering them to lead healthy, full lives.

In Prince Edward Island, MHS is applying a community-first, mobile integrated health model of care to provide rapid patient assessment and support to Islanders in a mental health crisis. MHS also manages Island EMS, in partnership with the Department of Health and Wellness and Health PEI.

In New Brunswick, MHS manages the NB Health Link program, in partnership with the provincial government, to make health care more accessible to residents without a primary caregiver. That’s in addition to its management of Ambulance New Brunswick and the Extra-Mural Program.

In Nova Scotia, MHS manages Emergency Health Services, 811 and Nova Scotia Medical Services Insurance (MSI), on behalf of the Department of Health and Wellness.

In St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, Medavie Blue Cross recently opened its third Medavie Benefits+ centre. It’s an insurance industry model in member service and experience, designed to help members to better understand their benefits and gain knowledge to support their wellness.

Throughout its 80-year history, Medavie has never lost sight of its roots, always taking a values-driven approach to business that balances purpose with performance. As a not-for-profit, Medavie retains its net income to reinvest in its business and give back to its communities. In 2022, Medavie’s community giving totaled $5.4 million and supported over 235 organizations across Canada including BGCs and YMCAs in the Atlantic region.
